Most 3D printing conversations assume a rigid part. TPU is the exception in our material range: a flexible thermoplastic that bends, compresses and springs back, opening up gaskets, grips and impact-absorbing parts that PLA and PETG simply cannot do.
01 What TPU Is Good At
TPU combines flexibility with genuine durability, a rarer pairing than it sounds. It resists abrasion, shrugs off most chemicals, and is effectively unaffected by water, so it holds up in applications that would degrade a rigid filament quickly.
- Gaskets and seals where a compressible face has to hold a join
- Phone cases and protective housings that need to absorb a drop
- Grips and handles where a soft touch surface matters
- Flexible hinges that survive repeated cycling without cracking
- Vibration dampers and machine feet under equipment
02 What TPU Is Bad At
Being honest about the limits saves you a wasted print.
Fine detail
The material is soft and prone to stringing. Crisp text, sharp edges and small features come out softer than they would in PLA or resin.
Rigid structure
If the part must hold its shape under load, TPU is the wrong choice. Use PETG for functional rigidity, or ABS and ASA where heat is involved.
Print speed
Flexible filament has to be fed slowly through a direct drive extruder. Expect a TPU part to take noticeably longer than the same geometry in PLA.
Food contact
TPU is not food safe in our range. For food-adjacent applications, PLA and PETG are the materials to ask about.
03 Designing for Flex
With rigid materials, geometry sets the shape and the material sets the strength. With TPU, geometry sets the stiffness. Three levers control how firm the finished part feels:
This is genuinely useful: the same model can be printed soft for a gasket and firm for a bumper with no change to the file. Tell us how the part should feel in your order notes and we will set walls and infill to suit rather than guessing.

05 Finishing a Flexible Part
TPU is the one material in our range that resists most finishing work. Sandpaper drags on the soft surface instead of cutting it, and epoxy coating is off the table entirely: a rigid clear coat cracks the moment the part flexes. Dyeing works well, and is the practical route to a colour we do not stock.
Design around the finish
Because you cannot sand a TPU part smooth afterwards, surface quality is decided by print orientation. Put the faces that matter where the layers land flat, and tell us which surface is the visible one.
